ATLIXCO

ATLIXCO.

is a city and a municipallity in the Mexican state of Puebla. It is a regional industrial and commercial center but economically it is much better known for its production of ornamental plants and cut flowers. The city was founded early in the colonial period, originally under the jurisdiction of Huejotzingo, but eventually separated to become an independent municipality. The municipality has a number of notable cultural events, the most important of which is the El Huey Atlixcayotl, a modern adaptation of an old indigenous celebration. This event brings anywhere from 800 to 1,500 participants from all over the state of Puebla to create music, dance and other cultural and artistic performances.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS.

"El Carmen" Ex Convent.

 

It is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city. Dating from the sixteenth century and was founded by the Order of Carmelites. Its original distribution had a couple of cloisters, a church and a small garden, making it one of the greatest architectural complex of Atlixco.

Throughout history, the former convent served as shelter for pilgrims, military barracks and courthouse. Today it houses a small museum of antiquities and other cultural activities forum.

"San Francisco" Convent.

This monastery is located in the foothills of San Miguel, its architecture is Renaissance and Neoclassical. Its interior conserves a magnificent altarpiece and Marian paintings on the walls of the cloister still appreciate with original frescoes of the eighteenth century

TRADITIONS.

"El Huey Atlixcáyotl" is the most important festival of Atlixco. It takes place once a year during the last Sunday of September. This tradition is similar in part to the Guelaguetza festival that takes place in Oaxaca, and that calls for the different ethnic groups of Puebla on top of the hill of San Miguel where a shrine around which dances are made and dances is located typical of different regions to ask for a good rainy season reditúen in good harvests.

Activities to do in Atlixco.

some activities to do in atlixco include sport fishing center Amatzcalli, the Xonacayuca and San Pedro Benito Juárez Ecotourism.

One kilometer from Atlixco you can go fishing golden trout in the town of Metepec Amatzcalli where the ecotourism center is located. Once you finalize the catch of the day you can go to the restaurant the place for you to prepare a delicious trout papered with typical regional recipes.

 Xonacayuca and San Pedro Benito Juárez Ecotourism.

 Atlixco arounds are full of woods and trails ideal for hiking and horseback riding. The towns of San Pedro Benito Juárez and Xonacayuca  is located in the foothills of Popocatepetl volcano and provide comfortable cabins for passing the night with a spectacular scenery.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Atlixco Gastronomy.

Typical dishes highlights in Atlixco is the beef jerky (Cecina in spanish), there is even the annual fair to promote their consumption during the month of August. Roast Beef jerky is prepared and served with garnishes of nopales, avocado and cheese. You can test it in local markets Benito Juárez and Ignacio Zaragoza.

Another gastronomic event that has brought fame to Atlixco is preparing the chili world's largest walnut sauce (chile en nogada) that takes place once a year in the gastronomic corridor located at kilometer 29. 5 of the federal highway to Izúcar de Matamoros.

How to get there?

By car coming from Mexico City, take Highway 150D Mexico - Puebla and kilometer 97 you will find the signs that lead you to Atlixco.
